It exists two types of people in the world: the ones that don’t mind and  are super cool about flying and the ones who are terrified about the idea. I am the second type, although nowadays I’m way better than how I used to manage the whole situation. Being a travel lover as I am, I had to discover ways of overcoming the fear of being thousand of feets above the floor and if you also think that way, here are some simple tips that might help you travel fearless.

Know the odds

The first tip and one of the most effective ones is that you must know the odds. Knowing the statistics of your flight and realising that an airplane is one of the safest transportation that exists makes you feel more comfortable. Everyone knows that. One of the things you might not know yet are:

  • The chance of dying in an airplane crash is 1 in 11 million. Yes, you read that right. The chance of getting killed by a shark (1 to 3.7 million), dying from food poisoning (1 in 3 million) or even by fallying out of bed (1 to 2 million) is higher.¹
  • Once you made it to the airport, you can feel safer, the chances of being killed in a carcrash are 1 to 5 million.²
  • Is even safer to use an airplane than being a left-handed people using right-handed products!

The more you read and understand about how a plane works, helps reduce the anxiety.

…and may the odds be ever in your favour.

Choose Your Flight Well

One of the things that helped me the most was choosing a nice company that could offer me some quality food, a nice seat where I could sleep better and a tv. A company have to treat you well so you can feel comfortable. Also, know which time of the day you prefer flying and prioritize this. If you feel better traveling at day when you can see everything outside or at night when you can sleep easier. A shorter flight without stops is always better as well.

Maintain a Positive mind

When I was little I used to LOVE flying, from the moment I started packing to the moment I was in the air watching the clouds through the window and I had never felt anxious. Why do you think kids never worry about a thing? They are always with a positive mind and don’t think about the small possibilities of something getting wrong. We should be more like kids sometimes. A positive mind creates a whole new environment and help you overcome your fears. Take deep breaths and mentalize your destination, the people that you will see soon and the feeling that you will have as soon as you step on the ground outside the plane. You do not have control on the future and in life in general, but you do have control on your mind. Trust the crew and keep smilling.

Distract yourself

Distracting yourself is a must when you are inside the plane facing your fears. Having a fun sitcom to watch, a good quality book to read and a variety of different snacks to enjoy is all a big plus that will surely help getting distracted.

Deal with Your Anxiety

I remember one time, one week before my flight, I was dealing with a strong anxiety which I couldn’t even concentrate in anything, I would just remember that soon I would have to face my flight and I would just cry more and more just thinking about it. That crossed the line, the thought of giving up on my travel was always crossing my mind and I know I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t let my anxiety win. So that was the moment I started reading more and more about the odds and statistics, I was concentrating in happy thoughts and I would meditate a lot. I knew it was all in my mind and that nothing bad would happen to me. The moment I accepted that and faced my fears, everything got better.

I hope this post helps people like me a little bit. Have a nice flight and enjoy your travel!
